Southern Military Routes I:
As the first part of the trilogy about the southern military routes of the Eastern Alps, we offer the largely unknown but equally interesting section from the lakes of Carinthia through the western part of Slovenia to Trieste on the Mediterranean Sea. After crossing the Karawanken and taking a detour to Triglav National Park, we mainly follow the infamous Isonzo Front of World War I before reaching the old port city of Trieste on the Mediterranean Sea through densely forested karst plateaus and the Mediterranean wine-growing region of the Vipava Valley. The first part of the route is characterized by the wild and lonely Julian Alps, where the roaring and famously turquoise-colored Soca River (Italian: Isonzo) originates. Impressive military trails on the ridges on both sides of its unspoiled and canyon-shaped riverbed lead us south on ideal mountain biking routes, passing by chilling war relics. The high mountains give way to densely forested hilly terrain, and the beech forests of the extensive and lonely Trnovo Plateau provide pleasant shade and accompany us on lonely gravel roads into the Mediterranean landscape of the Vipava Valley, strongly reminiscent of Tuscany. Through small-scale vineyards and over hill chains crowned with cypresses, we go, passing by the world-famous Lipica Stud Farm, directly down to the dreamy old town and picturesque harbor of the former Habsburg city of Trieste.
